HSE notices..........
The HSE has expressed that improperly trained “instructors” are an ongoing problem that must be tackled. To encourage safe work environments, comply with HSE guidance and reduce the possibility of accidents, businesses are urged to ensure that they employ or contract properly qualified instructors to train their operators. By not doing so, business owners and warehouse managers expose themselves to risk of prosecution, particularly in the event of an accident.
Forklift Operator Killed in 2013, Large Steel Fabrication Company fined
A large steel fabrication company have been fined £135,000 and ordered to pay costs of £46,020 after pleading guilty to a non-causative breach of Regulation 5(1) of the Management of Health and Safety Work Regulations 1999 for the fatal accident in 2013.The operator was killed when the truck he was operating overturned. When reversing the forklift, the operator struck some steps, which caused the overturn. Having not been wearing a seatbelt, the operator suffered crush injuries which proved fatal. The company in question failed to manage forklift driving operations, meaning they didn’t enforce the wearing of seat-belts or control the speed at which some forklift truck operators drove their trucks. This is why it is so important that not only are your forklift operators trained, but it is also important to ensure that the people who are meant to manage forklift operations are trained adequately to do so.
